MEDITATE – STEP #5 [CHECK PREVIOUS POST FOR STEPS #1-4: PREPARING FOR THE JOURNEY OF A LIFETIME]

To see yourself from the inside out:

  • SIT STILL & UPRIGHT
  • RELAX
  • CLOSE YOUR EYES ALMOST ALL THE WAY [LET LIGHT IN]
  • BREATHE CALMLY, DEEPLY, RHYTHMICALLY
  • FOCUS
  • FOCUS
  • FOCUS
  • FOCUS

You get the idea: it’s simple, not easy.

At the beginning, focus all of your attention on a physical aspect of your body (e.g., breath, heart beat, physical sensation). If that doesn’t work, silently and slowly recite the alphabet forward and backwards.

Your thoughts WILL drift away from the object of your attention. When you realize it’s happened, smile and gently bring your attention back to the object as if you’re lovingly leading a child home.

Like EVERYTHING, you WILL get better at it the longer you do it. How long have you been working at your profession? I assume you’re better at it today than your first day on the job. Same idea.

Eventually your intuition deepens as you access the more subtle, generally sub-conscious regions of your own mind.

Trust me, you WANT to be motivated by intuition. It saves SO MUCH TIME & TROUBLE!! 

 

 

Just start. Like ANY new healthy habit chose one a) you’ll enjoy and thus want to make time for, and b) one you KNOW you’ll be grateful for twenty years from now – to stoke that motivation. Because I’m lazy, I picked two simple, relatively easy ones a long time ago: walking and meditating.

It’s your body/mind. Take loving care of it because – sadly – no one else ever will. It took a long time for my teacher’s expression “we’re all alone” to sink in. THAT PART SUCKS!!

If you’re religious or spiritual, I encourage you to think of your body/mind as a gift from God.❤

If you’re not (and 16 years ago I wasn’t), I encourage you to recognize the scientific miraculousness of your body/mind – and to meditate!!

When you realize the nature of your own awareness, the world around you takes on an entirely new, miraculous perspective. I wish it for everyone.

Seeing life as miraculous, if not divine, is a happier way of living! That paradigm relieves fear, reducing blood pressure, stress and anxiety!

 

It inspires us to take better care of our self.

My job description: stimulating self-awareness in others.

BEWARE OF IMITATIONS

WHAT IS RAJA YOGA?

I’m a Raja Yogi, a devotee of Patanjali.

Patanjali was the legendary author of the Yoga Sutras, a 200-line poem universally recognized as the authoritative source on the science and practice of Raja Yoga.

Raja Yoga is a personal proof of the scientific hypothesis that consciousness (our awareness) isn’t like anything else in the known universe. This practice has withstood the test of time for good reason:

Mind control (generically, “meditation”) is a gateway “TO THE OTHER SIDE!!”

 

That’s not marketing hype; that’s fact.

I’m not an authority on Raja Yoga but I am speaking from personal experience. I’ve led an incredibly blessed life:

I was a straight A post-graduate student [we won’t talk about my college grades!] I passed the CPA exam on my first try. I worked for a big eight accounting firm in Manhattan for several years before becoming the chief accounting officer for a pubic company. I ran the back office of a multi-billion dollar investment company for thirteen years – and quit that insanely lucrative job on principle.

I became a disciple of Patanjali’s 15 years ago; I became a devotee and started teaching others two years ago.

Mind control literally changes your paradigm – your perspective on EVERYTHING!

You want to see yourself as I see you – I promise.

 

Here are a couple keys to success (all the details are in this blog), constantly:

  • practice distinguishing between your thinking and doing mind;
  • practice distinguishing between your thoughts and your awareness OF them;
  • practice driving your thinking mind – not just while you’re sitting on a meditation cushion;
  • contemplate the nature of your awareness.

I’m Not Enlightened

I haven’t worked hard enough or long enough, but as the cliché goes, it’s all about the journey because the goal isn’t guaranteed.

What I DO have is a healthy respect for – and faith in – an aspect of each of us that we naturally take for granted: our consciousness.

Without consciousness we wouldn’t know we’re alive!

 

Yeah! What would be the point of living if you weren’t aware of what your body and mind we’re experiencing in realtime??!

While WHAT we’re conscious of changes constantly due to the bipolar energetic nature of our world, our awareness OF those constant changes never does. Consciousness alone is unaffected by time and space.

It never changes. Without it we don’t realize we’re alive. Yeah, it’s essentially divine.

 

Modern religion refers to our consciousness as our spirit or soul. Somehow it’s true nature got lost in translation, but the message is the same: “You’ve got serious potential! Live up to it! The power is INSIDE YOU!!”

How does that light of self-awareness go on in someone? I suspect it’s unique in each case, but there are commonalities, markers along the route if you will.

The type of epiphany I had two years ago was traditionally likened to seeing something’s shadow.

ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHAT’S CASTING THE SHADOW – ONLY THAT SOMETHING IS!

 

I suspect when someone truly devout witnesses whatever’s casting the shadow it evokes a permanent change in them on an order of magnitude I can’t image.

My personal favorite shadow-caster image comes from my all-time favorite movie: Mulan.

Of course, it’s Mushu the little red dragon! Mulan’s clever, devoted caretaker.

Let me help you find your own inner Mushu. It’s typically a long, arduous journey – though with magnificent and inspiring views along the way.

What’s the real benefit of finding faith through self-mastery?

“Yea though I walk through the valley of death Baby!”

Meditate; it’s what’s good for you!

In All My Glory

A rather insightful elderly friend said to me the other day “You like the ladies.”

It wasn’t a question.  😂😂😂

Guilty, but today there are only four women capable of pressing my buttons:

  • My wife,
  • Our daughter,
  • My guru, and
  • My martial arts instructor.

But Mom is always in the mix. I’m still seeking my deceased mother’s approval. Pathetic? IDK. True self-awareness is a prerequisite for lasting peace.

I write. It’s what I do. For me it’s simultaneously evocative and cathartic. Someone once said, “I write because I can’t not write.” Feel ya Pal.

The other day as I was writing the following, I had to use every ounce of strength I had to ride out [rather than stuff!!] a ten-minute torrent of grief:

“Maybe before I die I’ll feel like the kid my mom would have respected.”

 

Not even loved.

Thank God my guru introduced me to scream therapy and thankfully our neighbors didn’t call the cops! 💔😭

The experience was tremendously cathartic. I released some seriously deep-seated anger.

Until we know and love ourselves we can’t know true peace.

Meditate.

Find answers, faith and peace!

It’s simple – not easy.

Sunday Reflection 05-20-18

Multiple choice – you may have one or the other:

  1. an unlimited source of income, or
  2. an unwavering belief in the existence of God

Which would be more valuable? Right. It’ll get you through the most painful times of your life when literally nothing else will.

Raja Yoga is PROOF that your consciousness is essentially divine!

 

Unfortunately, that truth must be experienced to be believed.

Raja Yoga is a personal discipline in self-awareness and control which leads the student to ultimately experience the truth of the underlying hypothesis:

An aspect of us is COMPLETELY UNAFFECTED BY TIME & SPACE (let alone spilled milk)!

 

It’ll freak you out when you realize the truly intangible, immutable, permanent nature of your own consciousness.

It begs questions like “WTF?! Where does THAT come from?!” It’ll either jump-start or turbo-charge your religious beliefs!!

 

Find absolute faith – not just in the EXISTENCE of God – but that God is ALWAYS WITH YOU(!) – and not JUST “with” you – but literally witnessing life THROUGH YOUR EYES!

Yeah – it’ll scramble the ‘ol gray matter at first, but when THAT new life paradigm “clicks” you’ll

Say goodbye to fear, anger, inaction, worry and sorrow!

 

Practice Raja Yoga, the science of mind control, and see if you don’t smile more often in the process of coming to the same conclusion!!

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE

My Qi Gong teacher has me rethinking something I wrote yesterday:

self-mastery leads to Self-awareness”

 

Raja or Patanjalian Yoga refers to our body/mind as our “self”, and consciousness as our “Self”.

Herein “Self-awareness” is another term for “Enlightenment”, a state in which the distinction between thought and awareness OF thought is apparent.

Thoughts are evidence of our Conscious Mind. The awareness OF our thoughts is evidence of our Consciousness, the aspect of us that’s intangible and immutable.

Patanjali’s discipline is consciousness-centric, purposefully bifurcating the universe between consciousness and everything else to make the point that:

Consciousness is essentially divine!

 

That said, all of my yoga teachers have stressed that while we’re here, we clearly remain human and therefore naturally fallible.

So IS Enlightenment the endgame?!

 

What if say, it happened to someone in the Fall of their life? They can’t just sit around dwelling in bliss (especially if they’re married and want to remain so)!

As the universe (and my Qi Gong teacher) keeps reminding me, it’s about being balanced and grounded while we’re here!

Be the best you can be! Tap into the power within yourself! Meditate!

GIVING BIRTH TO FAITH

Hi Kaya,

This is for your student who asked about fostering Faith.

According to Chinese self-mastery disciplines like Tai Chi and Qi Gong, winter is the best time of year to foster Faith [not coincidently, the time of year we tend to “go inside”].

I found Faith by practicing Patanjali’s Raja Yoga, the science of mind control or meditation.

Raja Yoga is experiential. When we put it to use in our life, we’re practicing. Until then it’s just information.

According to Patanjali, success (realizing the secret to life, or finding Faith and purpose) requires two things: consistency (i.e., never giving up) and non-attachment (i.e., always letting go).

HERE’S THE SHORT VERSION

Humans are multi-dimensional beings. Not sure? Do you think? Can you see your thoughts? Would your thoughts exist without you? Right. Our invisible thoughts are an integral part of who we are.

We have at least three invisible dimensions:

Our Conscious Mind functions; it’s always on; the conscious or “thinking” aspect of our mind functions like our heart and lungs: singly and sequentially – until our body no longer holds an electrical charge. 💔 Like  our lungs, our Conscious Mind naturally functions involuntarily, but we can override those systems and breathe and think voluntarily!! This aspect of our invisible Mind is evidenced by words in our head.

Our Sub-Conscious Mind also functions perpetually but at a lower energetic frequency; we just don’t hear it! The multi-tasking, “doing” aspect of our mind runs the ship silently and seemingly on autopilot. It’s also where our memories are stored [not unlike the furnace and storage areas in our home: they’re generally “downstairs”]. Our Sub-Conscious Mind is evidenced by sensations, insights and intuition.

All you need to know about our Sub-Conscious Mind [aka our “reptilian brain”] is that anything an alligator can do, this Sub-Conscious aspect of our Mind is capable of: walking, chewing, stalking prey, mating; further, this aspect of our mind works flawlessly (at Olympian athletic levels!) as long as our Conscious Mind is thinking clearly and correctly!

Our Consciousness doesn’t function. It just “is”. Our Consciousness CAN NOT BE AFFECTED BY ANYTHING. Raja Yoga is a personal discipline that inevitably makes that Self-evident. 😉

Consciousness is evidenced by the awareness OF whichever of the two aspects of our Mind is most energized.

You can imagine the practical benefits of never having to listen to the nagging voice in your head again – but here’s the catch:

this Truth must be experienced between our own two ears to be of any use!

 

HERE’S HOW

The first step in learning mind-control is discerning between when and which aspect of your Mind is engaged.

  • Do you hear words? You’re in your conscious “thinking” mind.
  • If instead, you’re only aware of sensations, images, memories, insights and intuition – you’re in your generally Sub-Conscious Mind: your operating system and storage area.

The second step is to figure out how to “drive” your Conscious Mind. It’s simple, it just requires constant practice. The critical thing to realize is that while we CAN simultaneously multi-task, we CAN NOT simultaneously multi-think [try simultaneously counting and reciting the alphabet].

After that, it’s like driving a sports car with three forward gears, reverse and neutral, that runs on five types of fuel, has a steering mechanism, and volume and speed controls. Search my blog posts for “driving your mind”.

The third step is to figure out where your Conscious Mind’s “neutral” is – so you can comfortably let your Mind idle. You can’t turn it off but you CAN allow it to slow down!

BUT WHEN DOES FAITH BLOOM??

It’s the “what happens next” part that’s harder to describe – but there are both short and long term physical, mental and emotional benefits: initially, mind control or meditation is stress relieving (imagine being able to control the voice in your head). Longer term, it deepens our intuition.

When does faith emerge? It depends on you and your teacher. My teachers say our purpose is to grow up – not just old, and the sooner we begin the sooner we’ll bloom into our inborn potential. 😉

It took me 13 years, but if you start with a map and an experienced guide it’ll make your journey infinitely easier!!! [btw – if you know me, you KNOW I’m NOT fully Self Realized – YET!!!]

The awareness OF thought (Consciousness) is eternal, immutable, and more subtle than the very fabric of the known universe – completely unaffected by the vagaries of time & space – yet a CRITICAL aspect of our life experience – because without awareness we wouldn’t taste, smell, hear, see, or feel!!!!!

It will freak you out when you realize a) the distinction between thought and the awareness OF thought, b) the eternal nature of Consciousness, and c) that IT’S INSIDE YOU!!!

You DO have a ‘spirit’ or ‘soul’!!  Those are modern religious synonyms for Consciousness!!!!!!!

That realization gives a whole new meaning to Faith.

Unfortunately, while the knowledge can be freely given (I’M TRYING!!) it must be personally experienced to be helpful to anyone. We each have to do the work. Until you use it, this is just information – like a treasure map – by itself, relatively valueless!!!

Self-discovery is like acquiring a shield in one of those electronic war games our son plays, though very real – just difficult to describe. It prompted someone to memorably declare “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil for thou art with me…!!”

Raja Yoga is simple but not easy. It takes discipline, tenacity and dedication (pigheadedness and being Irish help)!

As Patanjali said, when it “clicks” you know it. It’s indescribably liberating.

Chapter 1 – how this experience is possible

 

Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras are a guidebook or treasure map to experience something that can’t otherwise be understood: the secret of life!

The yoga sutras are proof of the underlying hypothesis that our consciousness is unlike EVERYTHING else in the known universe.

Consciousness alone is not affected by time and space. It’s literally the only “thing” known to man that’s eternally free of the perpetual law and consequences of karma which generate equal measures of suffering and joy.

The awareness OF our thoughts is as distinct from our thoughts as our fingers are from our ears!

 

In the process of learning to control our mind, we eventually come to the realization that consciousness is a horse of a completely different color!!

It’ll freak you out. If it hasn’t, don’t stop trying to realize the difference!!!!!! THAT is Raja Yoga.

Chapter 2 – how to prepare for the experience

 

Chapter 2 tells us how to prepare for the journey of a lifetime.

 

The chapter is broken into two parts: the first stressing the importance of our attitude, the second includes step-by-step instructions to prepare for the internal journey.
